Overview
The Uncontrolled growth and division of some abnormal cells of the Breast. Resulting in the formation of a mass, named tumor is called Breast Cancer.
Some major symptoms of breast cancer are a lump in the breast, increase size of the breast, or any change to the shape of the breast.
What is Breast Cancer?
Normally, cell division occurs only if there is a need. But, If the uncontrolled growth and division of normal cells occur, it is called Benign.
If uncontrolled growth and division of abnormal cells occur, then it's called Malignancy. And that mass will be called a Malignant Tumor.
These malignancies are named according to the site where they are originated.
If they are originated in breast tissues, then it's called Breast Cancer. And if that travels from originated site to other areas, then it's called Metastasis.

Who Gets Breast Cancer?
Breast Cancer is the Second most common death-causing disease in women after Skin cancer.
Normally, increasing age is a major risk factor as about 66% of patients are diagnosed after 55 years of age.
Studies suggest that Breast Cancer is the second death-causing cancer after lung cancer.
Only 5-10% of Breast Cancers are clearly defined genetic predisposition, and the rest of all are sporadic means no definitive gene mutation.
How Breast Cancer is Treated?
As the doctor diagnoses cancer, the next step is to plan its eradication, reducing its chances of returning, and restricting it from traveling to other sites or areas.
As the doctor determines the stage of cancer, then its first priority will be to select the best treatment for that particular stage.
Types Of Breast Cancer Treatment
There are a lot of breast cancer treatment types, which include local or systemic.
The Aim of local treatment is to remove, destroy, and control cancer cells like on the breast. This includes Surgery and Radiation Therapy.
And, the aim of systemic treatment is to remove, destroy, and control cancerous cells all over the body. Normally this is done by chemotherapy and hormone therapy.
It depends on the diagnosis that which treatment should be given, either or both of these.
Surgery-Breast Cancer Treatment
Normally, two types of surgery are done for breast cancer treatment, which is Lumpectomy and Mastectomy. There is another procedure also that's Breast Reconstructive Surgery.
Lumpectomy is a procedure in which the surgeon removes the affected part of the breast with some of its surrounding cells.
Sometimes, Lymph nodes may be removed and then radiation therapy is done for almost 6 weeks to treat the remaining cells.
Patients at the early and small stages are good candidates.
Mastectomy is another surgical procedure in which complete breast removal is done. Only recommended if cancer is all over the breast.
Breast Reconstructive Surgery is a procedure in which a flap of artificial tissue is inserted by a plastic surgeon.
This procedure is of two types, named Prosthetic and Tissue Flap.
In Prosthetic, the surgeon creates a shape of the breast with artificial implant filling of saline or silicone.
In Tissue Flap, the surgeon creates shape after taking tissues from different parts of the body like the Stomach, Back, Buttocks, and Thighs to rebuild the shape.
Radiation Therapy- A well-known Breast Cancer Treatment
Radiotherapy is a procedure in which high-energy rays similar to x-rays are used to kill cancerous cells. Its normally done on patients over 70, who have got lumpectomy, to destroy remaining cells.
This procedure is recommended by doctors to kill the cancerous cells, which are not killed by surgeons.
Done by machine from outside the body or some type of seeds are inserted into the breast which emits these rays.
Normally this treatment is recommended at the early stage of cancers.
Different types of radiotherapy are there, a few are given below:
- Breast Radiotherapy
- Chest wall Radiotherapy
- Lymph nodes Radiotherapy
- Breast boost Radiotherapy
The type of Radiotherapy treatment totally depends on the type of breast cancer and surgery you have gone through.
It also has side effects like fatigue, darkening of breast skin, and lymphoedema of lymph nodes underarm.
Chemotherapy- Best Breast Cancer Treatment
Sometimes special medicines are used to shrink or kill the cancerous cells. these special medicines might be pills or medicines given through veins.
There are 2 types of Chemotherapies, named Adjuvant Chemotherapy and Neo-adjuvant Chemotherapy.
In Adjuvant Chemotherapy, medicines are given after the surgery is done.
In Neo-adjuvant Chemotherapy, special medicines are given to shrink the size of the tumor.
Chemotherapy is usually done on patients who are not admitted to hospitals or who do daily outback from the hospital.
Who Decides the Type of Breast Cancer Treatment?
Which treatment suits the patient is decided by the type of Cancer, Stage of Cancer, Age, or Some tests.
After all these conditions, the doctor comes up with more than 1 type of treatment. Then, the doctor asks the patient or his family to go with which treatment.
The most preferred treatment of breast cancer is the treatment with fewer side effects.
